RUSSIA/US: Summit unlikely to improve ties

The first Russian-US summit since the US election, being held in Bratislava tomorrow, takes place at a troubling time. President Vladimir Putin's interference in the Ukrainian presidential election, persecution of Yukos and backsliding on democratisation have put the question of values firmly on the bilateral agenda. There are also growing strategic tensions in the former Soviet space and serious disagreements on international issues, notably Iran.
