Outlook
In June, the candidates for the Democratic Party’s nomination for president sparred in televised debates. The candidate field is wide, with many experienced politicians. Equally wide is the array of issues being debated before 2020’s elections, including healthcare, education, debt and foreign policy.
From early next year, a series of primary elections will determine who the Democrats put up against Republican President Donald Trump. He has the advantages of being incumbent, but his pledge to ‘Make America Great Again’ and ‘Keep America Great’ after 2020 has not won universal acclaim.
Impacts
- With a wide field, the Democrats risk extensive policy infighting before November, including over calls to impeach Trump.
- Trump’s re-election chances are at risk if foreign trade tariffs hit his core supporters too hard.
- Trump will push to reach deals with foreign countries including China pre-2020 to solidify his support base.
